Tava (or Tavá-kaavi) is the original Ute name for Pikes Peak in Colorado, meaning "Sun Mountain" or "Mountain of the Sun" in the Uto-Aztecan (Colorado River Numic) language
-
The Ute people named the 14,115-foot summit Tava because its high granite face is the very first landform on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains to catch the rays of the morning sun.
Creation Place: In Ute oral tradition, Tava-kaavi is viewed as an ancestral place of origin and a sacred site for ceremonies, the Sun Dance, and the Bear Dance.
The Tabeguache Band: The specific Ute band that traditionally inhabited the Pikes Peak region was the Tabeguache, a name that translates directly to "People of the Sun Mountain". [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
-
Pre-Pike Names: Long before European-American contact, other Indigenous groups also had their own names for the summit, including the Arapaho (Heey-otoyoo or "Long Mountain") and the Pawnee (Tûs Pêh or "Where the Heavens Touch the Earth"). Spanish explorers later called it Sierra de Almagre or El Capitán.
Zebulon Pike: U.S. Army officer Zebulon Montgomery Pike viewed the mountain in November 1806 but never summited it. He originally referred to it in his journals as the "Grand Peak" or "Highest Peak," not his own name.
Gold Rush and Naming: The name "Pike's Peak" (and later "Pikes Peak") caught on nationally during the 1858–1859 Pikes Peak Gold Rush and was officially adopted without an apostrophe by the federal Board on Geographic Names in 1890.
Modern Renaming Efforts: In recent years, local cultural preservationists and advocacy campaigns have pushed to recognize or formally restore the Indigenous name as Tavá Mountain to honor the region's original inhabitants. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]
